With 50% of workers planning to look for a new job in 2020, finding and securing a role that suits your personality and skillset can be extremely competitive.
Here’s some tips on how to identify the companies you want to work for, the people you want to work with, and the career paths you want to pursue.
Reflect on experience
Before you begin endlessly scrolling through online job boards, have a think about your career to date and ask yourself why you left, or are leaving, your job? Was it your team, your responsibilities or the company itself? Were the hours not flexible enough for your lifestyle, did the company not share your values or did you simply fancy a change?
Figuring this out will enable you to filter out companies, sectors and positions that don’t appeal to you. Start researching businesses by checking out their website, blogs and social media presence to get an idea of what their workplace environment is like.
We learn from experience – so use it to your advantage!
Find out what motivates you
Think about what It is that drives you and what you want out of your new position. Is it more money? Career progression? Friendships? Work-life balance? This will streamline your search even further and help you pinpoint roles that match what you’re looking for.
If you can’t determine if you’ll gain these things from your job search (after all, adverts can’t include every detail about a position), prepare questions for your recruiter or interviewer so you’re properly informed about the role and the opportunities on offer.
Play to your strengths
Analyse your skillset to identify your strengths and weaknesses. From soft skills like organisation, communication and leadership to hard skills like mathematics, IT and writing, everyone has different talents, you just need to recognise what yours are.
Before even sending a company your CV, consider whether your skills and personality match the role and if you’ll enjoy and excel in it. If the answer is no, perhaps think twice about applying if you know your heart’s not going to be in it.
Once you’ve worked all this out and have a clear image of where you want to be, you’ll be well on your way to finding your perfect role.
